The Theory Test was introduced in July 1996. It is now a touch screen computer based multiple choice test and must be passed before the Practical Driving Test can be booked. This does not mean however that it must be passed before starting to learn to drive. The Theory Driving Test consists of 50 questions with the pass mark being 43 correct answers. A hazard perception element was introduced in the Theory Test in November 2002. This is delivered on a computer and you respond by clicking the mouse button. It consists of 14 video clips, in each clip there will be at least one developing hazard but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards. The earlier your respond to these developing hazards the higher score you will achieve. The maximum score you could achieve is 75 points, that's 5 points/clip. At the moment the pass mark is 44.
